Casting methods
Compare traditional sources, steps, probabilities and boundaries of three casting methods.
Yarrow-stalk casting
Use 49 stalks. Each line has three rounds of dividing in two, setting aside one, counting in fours and collecting remainders. The six lines form the hexagram from bottom to top.
Three-coin casting
Cast three coins together six times, recording from the bottom to the top line. Each cast’s three-coin sum gives 6, 7, 8 or 9.
Meihua Yishu casting
Use remainders modulo 8 to set the upper and lower trigrams, then the total modulo 6 to set the changing line. A zero remainder means trigram 8 or line 6 respectively.
