Meihua Yishu casting
Use remainders modulo 8 to set the upper and lower trigrams, then the total modulo 6 to set the changing line. A zero remainder means trigram 8 or line 6 respectively.
Traditional basis
Meihua Yishu, volume 1, gives division by 8 for trigrams and by 6 for lines, along with the year-month-day-hour procedure. This site also provides a separately identified simplified two-number entry.
Earlier Heaven trigram numbers
| Number | Trigram | Number | Trigram |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Qian ☰ | 5 | Xun ☴ |
| 2 | Dui ☱ | 6 | Kan ☵ |
| 3 | Li ☲ | 7 | Gen ☶ |
| 4 | Zhen ☳ | 8 | Kun ☷ |
Year-month-day-hour method
- Use the year’s Earthly Branch number: Zi 1, Chou 2, through Hai 12. Use lunar-calendar month and day numbers.
- Year branch number + month + day, modulo 8, sets the upper trigram.
- Add the hour branch number and take modulo 8 to set the lower trigram.
- The year-month-day-hour total, modulo 6, sets the changing line.
- A zero remainder modulo 8 means Kun, number 8; modulo 6 means the top line, number 6.
Two-number entry
The site’s simplified number convention is explicit and checkable: the first number modulo 8 sets the upper trigram, the second modulo 8 sets the lower, and their sum modulo 6 sets the changing line.
This entry is a product convention, not a word-for-word reproduction of volume 1’s calendar-time procedure. The result page retains the two original numbers and the upper/lower trigram and changing-line calculations.
Reading limits
Numbers and time only determine trigrams and lines. Input numbers themselves do not generate personality claims, fortune judgments or certain event predictions on this site.
