朱熹《周易本義》

Judgment exegesis

Zhu Xi explains Cui through Kun’s responsiveness and Dui’s joy, with firm centered strength in the fifth line answered by the second. Gathered things require centered, correct leadership; improper gathering cannot lead to unhindered progress, and unexpected events after assembly also need preparation.

Traditional source · editorial summary in Chinese · Line texts

  1. The first yin line has trustworthiness but cannot sustain it, disturbed into improper gathering by two nearby yin lines. Disregard ridicule, respond clearly and approach its proper fourth-line correspondence.
  2. Yielding, centered correctness in the second line lies between two yin lines and needs mutual drawing to gather with the fifth. Inner sincerity allows modest offerings to express genuine respect.
  3. Yielding yin in the third line lacks centered correctness, seeking gathering nearby without success and only sighing. Abandon improper nearby support and turn upward; despite slight humiliation, blame can be avoided.
  4. The fourth yang line gathers the fifth above and yin below, but yang in a yin position is not correct. Great auspiciousness is required to be sufficient to avoid blame.
  5. Firm, centered correctness in the honored fifth position can originally be without blame in gathering. If some remain distrustful, further cultivate lasting steadfast correctness.
  6. Yielding yin at the top lacks position at the end of gathering, seeking union without attaining it and remaining uneasy. Deep concern and grief are needed to avoid blame.
