朱熹《周易本義》

Judgment exegesis

Zhu Xi explains Tong Ren through the fire of Li joining heaven above and the centered, correct second yin line corresponding with the fifth yang line. Genuine commonality must be broad, without selfishness, and accord with the exemplary person’s proper way.

Traditional source · editorial summary in Chinese · Line texts

  1. At the beginning, there is no object of partiality. Yang firmness below has no entanglement above; going beyond the doorway to join others can be without blame.
  2. Although centered and correct, the second yin line is tied only to its clan and private correspondence with the fifth yang line. Failing broad impartiality leaves the humiliation of narrowness.
  3. A firm line that is neither centered nor in proper correspondence wishes to join the second yin line without a rightful basis, while fearing the fifth yang line. It therefore lies concealed and guarded, unable to act.
  4. The fourth yang line also lacks centered correctness and contends for union with the second yin line. But firmness in a yielding position allows reflection and stopping an attack for what is right; correction brings auspiciousness.
  5. The fifth yang and second yin lines correspond with centered correctness. Though blocked by the third and fourth lines, their shared principle cannot ultimately be separated. They meet after overcoming initial difficulty.
  6. At the outermost position without proper correspondence, there is no partner to join. Although without regret, the purpose has not truly been realized.

Judgment introduction

Tong Ren concerns cooperation with others. Genuine fellowship goes beyond a close small circle toward openness, breadth and impartiality, maintaining common ground amid differences through the exemplary person’s proper path.

Plain-language reading · Line texts

  1. Just outside the gate, join others without a favored private group. An open approach can avoid blame.
  2. Seeking fellowship only within a clan or small group is narrow and self-interested, falling short of broad fellowship.
  3. Seeking companions without a proper standing, while long guarding against the other party out of fear, ultimately makes action difficult.
  4. Initially intending forceful contest, one later reflects and stops for what is right. Correcting the fault in time is described as auspicious.
  5. Both sides respond with centrality and correctness. Though temporarily separated, a genuinely shared purpose can finally bring them together.
  6. At the outermost position without a counterpart, there may be no regret, yet the aim of true fellowship remains unrealized.
